Montenegro deposited the accession instruments to the Convention of the IMO and its amendments on 10 October, 2006 and became 167 member state of IMO. Admittance of Montenegro was officially approved at the 97th Assembly of the IMO Council, held in London on 17 November, 2006. Following the admission to IMO, Montenegro accepted conventions and protocols, as well as rights and commitments that the membership in such organization requires. In that respect, one of the key objectives of Montenegro is to strengthen legal and administrative framework aimed at raising the security and safety level, protection of sea pollution and ecological protection in harbours, marines and shipyards. The acceptance of conventions and standards provides access to cooperative programs, which are design to assist states lacking in experts and equipment to function successfully in the field of maritime industry.
