Montenegro and International Atomic Energy Agency

Montenegro became member of International Agency for Atomic Energy on 30 October, 2006. Montenegro acceded by succession to conventions to which Montenegro was a member in previous state arrangements and which are deposited with the Secretary-General of the Agency. Cooperation between Montenegro and International Agency for Atomic Energy mainly relates to IAEA technical assistance programs. Montenegro signed Safeguards Agreement with IAEA, Additional Protocol and Small Quantities on 19 May 2008. Delegation of Montenegro attended 51st and 52nd regular session of the IAEA General Conference. On the 52nd session Country Programme Framework (CPF) was signed between Government of Montenegro and IAEA.
CPF contains development priorities which are agreed with representatives of authorized bodies of Montenegro and IAEA for 2008-2013. Responsible institutions for protection from radiation as priorities defined the following areas: environmental protection, medicine-oncology (radiotherapy) and prohibited transport of nuclear and related radioactive materials across the border. In accordance with these priorities, following national projects were approved:
  • MNE2007002: „Upgrading of capabilities to establish effective systems for monitoring residues in food and air quality in Montenegro (Centre for Ecotoxicological Research of Montenegro)
  • MNE2007003: “Support for development of the regulatory infrastructure in Montenegro” (Ministry of Tourism and Environmental Protection);
  • MNE2007001: “ Improvement of radiotherapy services in the Clinical Centre of Montenegro, as a crucial facility for patients with malignant diseases”( Clinical Centre of Montenegro – Oncology clinic)
